Dekmantel opened yesterday in the Amsterdamse Bos and runs to August 2nd — 160-plus artists, and an expansion called Dekmantel at Dawn that turns it into three twelve-hour days. Thirty-six hours in a forest. The bill is not a heritage parade either: Underground Resistance appearing with Saul Williams, LSD Live — Luke Slater, Steve Bicknell and Function in one room — Villalobos, and a one-off Helena Hauff back-to-back with L.F.T. Detroit's most uncompromising institution, in a wood outside Amsterdam, with a poet.

Read this against the same city's TILLATEC closing and the pattern gets loud: the festival is expanding while the permanent room shuts. Club culture is migrating out of buildings and into calendar events. That's cheaper, safer and better attended — and it means the thing that made scenes (a room open every week, where people become regulars) is being replaced by something that happens four days a year.

Today's Album of the Day: 'Cicada Burnt' by leo, a Manchester producer, out on Peak Oil — the Los Angeles imprint that has quietly been one of the most reliable filters in experimental electronic music. Abstract, dubby, pristine sub bass, UK and Detroit lineage run through experimental sound design, sparse and wandering, cleaner than his recent work but still fuzzed and distressed at the edges. And the thesis is the part that matters: leo frames the record as a response to post-industrial club culture — specifically the abandoned warehouses that used to hold these scenes and have since been gentrified out of existence. The reviewer's note is that it sounds DIGITAL rather than industrial. The buildings are gone, so the music stopped pretending to be made of brick.

THE READ

This is the same story as TILLATEC and Dekmantel arriving as an aesthetic instead of a headline — an artist processing the disappearance of the physical scene in the texture of the record itself. Peak Oil is the label to track. And 'post-industrial club music that no longer sounds industrial' is a genuinely new formal idea, not a revival.

Amsterdam loses TILLATEC — De School's successor, 900 capacity, restaurant and community centre attached, final event in November — in the same week the same city hosts an expanded 36-hour Dekmantel, and a Manchester producer releases a record about warehouses being gentrified away. Aries has spent a decade being the London label that gets referenced and rarely credited; the sub-line getting a Converse silhouette is that influence finally being paid out in the most legible currency there is.
