BERLIN, CHRISTOPHER STREET DAY, AND THE ROOM THAT ANSWERED

CRESTING·DAY 1 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

On July 25th a 21-year-old drove a van into the crowd at Christopher Street Day in the Tiergarten, then went at people with a machete. One woman died. Twenty-nine were injured, several critically. He ran; police shot him the next day. That is the fact and it deserves to be stated plainly before anything else is said about it.

AS REPORTED

What happened next is the part this dispatch exists to record. The Berlin Club Commission — the body that usually fights about licensing and noise complaints — put out a statement saying they were deeply shocked and devastated by the attack on everyone who took to the streets to stand up for the self-determination, visibility and rights of queer people. A remembrance rally at Pariser Platz on the 26th registered 600 people. Around ten thousand came.

THE READ

Berlin's club culture is not incidentally queer, it is CONSTITUTIVELY queer — the rooms exist because people needed somewhere to be, and an attack on a pride march is an attack on the same constituency. The response is the signal: an industry body speaking as a community rather than a trade group, and a turnout that beat its own registration by a factor of sixteen. If you work with this culture, understand that its politics are not a marketing layer over the music. They are the reason the rooms were built.

JOHN 'JAMMIN' COLLINS — THE AMBASSADOR IS GONE

CRESTING·DAY 1 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

Detroit Techno Militia announced it on July 26th. John 'Jammin' Collins, born in Detroit, raised in Hamtramck, DJing BEFORE techno existed as a word — a residency at Cheeks Nightclub in the eighties alongside Jeff Mills, which is a sentence that should stop you where you stand. He became Underground Resistance's ambassador, released the 'Yeah' EP on UR in 2009, founded the Detroit Regional Music Conference in 1994, and — the detail that says the most about him — spent years as a guide at Submerge's Exhibit 3000, walking people through the museum of the thing he helped build. He was still playing weeks ago.

AS REPORTED1 para

And here is what makes today heavy rather than merely sad: Underground Resistance are ON STAGE at Dekmantel this week, in a forest outside Amsterdam, with Saul Williams. Collins died three days before that bill opened.

THE READ1 para

The first generation of Detroit techno is now actively passing, and the people going are the ARCHIVISTS — the ones who kept the story straight and told it to visitors in person. Exhibit 3000 exists because someone stood in it and explained. That transmission is oral and it is closing. If you have ever wanted to hear this history from the people who made it, the window is not theoretical anymore. Go to the museum, buy the records, read the interviews while they are still being given.

KAVINSKY, 50 — THE NIGHTCALL ENDS

CRESTING·DAY 1 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

Vincent Belorgey, found dead at his home in Paris on the night of Tuesday the 28th, aged 50. Le Figaro reports a stroke is being considered; a police source said he had been complaining of headaches for days. No suspicious circumstances.

AS REPORTED1 para

He made 'Nightcall,' which opens Drive — four minutes that did more to define a decade's worth of visual mood than most directors manage in a career. Every neon-and-chrome retrowave frame you have seen since 2011 is downstream of it. He played it at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics in 2024, which is about as complete an arc as French electronic music offers: bedroom producer to a national stage, on the strength of a song about a car and a phone call.

THE READ1 para

That specific French-touch lineage — Daft Punk, Sebastian, Justice, Kavinsky — is now a closed historical period rather than a living scene, and it is being reassessed accordingly. Expect the retrowave aesthetic to get a serious critical pass rather than the ironic one it has had. If you reference that visual language in work, know that as of this week it carries a memorial charge it did not carry last month.

NICO STOJAN — BAR 25

BUBBLING·DAY 1 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

The third one this week. Nico Stojan, veteran Berlin artist and a resident at Bar 25, died on July 27th. Bar 25 is the shorthand for a specific Berlin that people still describe in the tone reserved for things they are not sure actually happened — the Spree-side hedonist commune that closed in 2010 and became mythology almost immediately. Its residents are the last people who can say what it was actually like rather than what it has been turned into.

THE READ1 para

Three losses inside four days, across Detroit, Paris and Berlin, all from the generation that built the modern club map. This is not a coincidence to be read for meaning — it is an actuarial fact arriving. That generation is entering the years when this happens, and the institutional memory goes with them unless it is deliberately captured.

76 NEW Died 27 July, reported in RA's weekly roundup alongside the week's other losses.

DEKMANTEL PLAYS ON — UP, AND IT READS DIFFERENTLY TODAY

CRESTING·DAY 2 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

Still running in the Amsterdamse Bos through August 2nd, 160-plus artists, thirty-six hours across three days. Nudged UP one point, and not because anything was announced. Because Underground Resistance are performing there, with Saul Williams, in the same week UR's ambassador died in Detroit. The festival did not stop. It was never going to, and it should not have. That is what these rooms are FOR — the dancing is not in spite of the dying, it is the response to it.

THE READ1 para

Unchanged as an actionable read: the festival expands while permanent rooms close. But add this — a scene's health is measured by what it does in a bad week, and this week the answer was a statement from the Club Commission, ten thousand at Pariser Platz, and a Detroit institution playing a forest in Holland anyway.

HOURLOUPE — 'LAST LOST WORD'

UNDERGROUND·DAY 1 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

Today's Bandcamp Album of the Day. The name is a Dubuffet reference — L'Hourloupe was the cycle he spent twelve years on, the jigsaw-cell paintings in red, white, blue and black that he said came from doodling while on the phone. Naming a record after an art brut painter's longest obsession is a statement of intent about where you think you sit.

THE READ1 para

Low-volume, high-specificity — the kind of name-drop that tells you exactly which lineage the artist is claiming before you hear a note. Useful for reference-mapping when a brief wants outsider-art rigour rather than outsider-art aesthetics.

74 NEW Album of the Day placement today; early, pre-consensus.

NORA STANLEY GOES SOLO

UNDERGROUND·DAY 1 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

Bandcamp profiled saxophonist Nora Stanley yesterday on 'Glass,' her move into solo work. Solo saxophone is one of the least forgiving formats there is — nowhere to hide, no rhythm section to carry a weak idea — and choosing it is usually a sign someone has something specific they need to say alone.

THE READ1 para

The jazz-adjacent experimental lane keeps supplying texture to electronic and ambient work, usually uncredited. Worth tracking at the source. Reference value for briefs that need warmth and breath rather than synthesis.

72 NEW Feature profile on a solo turn; steady, low-hype.

AI WATCHDOG — HELD AT 88

CRESTING·DAY 3 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

The Atlantic's searchable index of four AI training datasets — roughly 21.2 million tracks — holds with no movement. Still free, still no account required.

THE READ1 para

Unchanged: search your own catalogue. It converts suspicion into evidence while the Suno, Udio and Lyria 3 cases run.

Yesterday's Album of the Day holds. The Manchester producer's record about post-industrial club culture and gentrified warehouses — digital rather than industrial, because the buildings are gone. It sits differently in a week when three of the people who built those rooms died.

THE READ

Unchanged: Peak Oil is the label to track, and post-industrial club music that no longer sounds industrial is a genuinely new formal idea.

THE FULL ENTRY

Amsterdam's TILLATEC still closing, final event November. Holding. Worth noting it sits in the same city hosting Dekmantel this week — the festival expands, the room shuts, both true at once.

THE READ

Unchanged: the permanent room is what is under threat, not electronic music. Watch what takes the De School address.

10THE DINÉ MESCALINE OBJECTION — FOURTH DAY, STILL NOTHINGUNDERGROUND4NO CLAIM FILED86— 0
THE FULL ENTRY

Fourth consecutive day of tracking and still no coverage outside the specialist psychedelic press. The Teesto Chapter's formal request that the DEA deny Benuvia's mescaline manufacturing application, filed over a failure to consult the Navajo Nation, the National Congress of American Indians or the Native American Church. Holding at 86 rather than nudging again — the silence is established now, not news in itself.

THE READ

Still the longest-tailed story in the psychedelic space and still uncontested ground. FDA's September 14 hearing remains the forcing function.

7 RULED COOKED

Signals this desk called live and then called over, with the dates of both readings. Nothing reaches this list by fading out: a stone requires a stage that actually changed in a published issue. Where no cause is given, none was written at the time — a cause of death composed now, for something that died in June, would be a story fitted to an outcome already known.

Gone quiet

28 SILENT

This is a fact about this publication, not about culture. These are stories the board carried at least 3 times and has not mentioned for 10 days or more. That happens when a story ends, when it moves somewhere this desk is not reading, and when attention simply drifted — and from here those look identical. The silence is recorded because it is real; what it means is not claimed. Showing the 10 most-covered of 28; the rest are in the archive.
