John 'Jammin' Collins died in Detroit on July 26th — Underground Resistance's ambassador, the man who held a residency at Cheeks in the eighties ALONGSIDE JEFF MILLS, who spent his last working years guiding visitors through Exhibit 3000 telling them what it was actually like.

Three days later Dekmantel opened. On the bill: UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE. JUAN ATKINS, presenting INFINITI — one of the Belleville Three, a man who was there when the word techno started meaning this. And JEFF MILLS, debuting a new work called STARGATE in the At Dawn programme.

Detroit's founding generation spent this week on stage in a wood outside Amsterdam while one of their own was being mourned at home. Nobody planned that. It closes tonight.

The originators are still WORKING — Mills debuting new material, Atkins reviving INFINITI, UR touring with a poet — and they are doing it at a European festival rather than in Detroit, which is the economic story under the cultural one. JEFF MILLS DEBUTS 'STARGATE' AT SUNRISE

In the At Dawn programme — a new Dekmantel strand built with Resident Advisor, weekend ticket holders only, running the morning hours in the Amsterdamse Bos — Jeff Mills premiered a new project called STARGATE. Alongside it: DJ Sprinkles presenting Deeperama, Sampha in a rare DJ set, Eris Drew channelling 'Mystery of the Motherbeat', and James Holden with Surgeon opening the whole thing as a live-improv ceremony.

That is a morning slot given to a live improvisation between two of the most uncompromising people in electronic music, and a Detroit founder using it to launch something new rather than play the hits.

DEKMANTEL GOES INTO THE CITY

First time in twelve editions: Dekmantel took over Paradiso and Melkweg on the Thursday — DARKSIDE, Juan Atkins presenting INFINITI, Nicolás Jaar collaborations. The festival also opened on the 29th with Space Afrika playing the Oude Kerk, which is a medieval church, which tells you exactly how much room this festival now has to move in that city.
