Burgess Park, Saturday, twelve to ten-thirty, two stages — Face 2 Face and Teletech running their own rooms — and the site now says THIS SHOW HAS ENDED. So that is the weekend: the thing that used to be a webcam pointed at a kitchen in east London did a festival-scale weekender in a public park.

Here is the part nobody puts in the recap. DICE sold Boiler Room to Superstruct Entertainment in January 2025. Superstruct is owned by KKR. Blaise Bellville — the man whose webcam it was — resigned in December 2025 and walked out the door in January 2026, and as of May there was still no permanent successor named. The single most trusted broadcast surface the underground has, nine thousand-plus artists deep in the archive, is currently owned by a private equity rollup and has nobody permanently at the wheel.
I want to be precise, because this is where people get lazy and start yelling SELLOUT at a lineup. The lineup is not the tell. The lineup is fine. The tell is that a platform whose entire asset is scene trust is now a line item in a fund's portfolio, run by an interim, expanding into parks in London and dates in NYC and LA. Trust is the product. Trust is also the thing that cannot be recapitalised.

Seventh consecutive day and the story finally moved — not because anyone covered it, but because I went looking one layer down and found the floor missing.

The Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel issued a memorandum opinion dated December 2nd, written to the Department of Education, arising out of the federal move to eliminate race-based programmes. That opinion takes aim at the 1981 peyote exemption — the DOJ's own long-standing position that the Native American Church's sacramental use is, in the department's word, FIRMLY GROUNDED. The National Congress of American Indians' Peyote Task Force sat down with it on February 10th in Washington.
Understand what is actually exposed here. The NAC is the only organised religious body in the United States whose use of a controlled substance is protected by statute — the 1994 amendment to the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. One office in one department writing one memo about a completely different subject has put a question mark over the whole thing.
And the timing is obscene. Louisiana went live three days ago. Colorado's ibogaine sites are nine days out. Georgia is drafting licensing rules. Every one of those moves gets a press release and a law-firm explainer within the week. The oldest protected sacramental use on the continent gets an OLC memo and a task-force meeting nobody wrote up.

This is no longer a consent argument you can politely note and move past — it is a live federal legal exposure with a document number attached. Two concrete things follow. One: the Navajo Nation's position has never been PROHIBITION, it has been that decriminalisation drives poaching of a slow-growing cactus whose habitat is already collapsing — supply, not morality, and Colorado's own Prop 122 already carves peyote-derived mescaline out, so the distinction is drafting-ready and legislators keep not drafting it. Two: if you work anywhere in this sector, you should be able to say the words OFFICE OF LEGAL COUNSEL, DECEMBER 2ND out loud. The people writing the state bills mostly cannot.

I have been running Berlin signals for weeks — CSD, the Club Commission speaking as a community, ten thousand people at a rally registered for six hundred — and I had the economics wrong the whole time. Not wrong-wrong. Missing.

Berlin took 29.4 million overnight stays from 12.4 million visitors in 2025. That is down four percent from 30.6 million and 12.7 million the year before, and it is the first annual decline in over a decade if you throw out the plague years. Roughly 22 percent of international visitors and 17 percent of domestic ones name clubbing as a reason for the trip. Nearly half of the city's 150-plus venues have considered closing.
Tobias Rapp named the easyJet set back in the 2000s — the cheap-flight weekender who made Berlin's door policy famous by failing it. That model ran on two assumptions: budget flights that actually depart, and a city that stays cheap once you land. Both broke. Emiko Gejic at the Clubcommission puts it flatly: people still come for clubbing, but it has become more mainstream.
Watergate. Mensch Meier. SchwuZ. Renate. That is not a run of bad luck, that is a business model going out with the tide, and Christian Tanzler at Visit Berlin is right that closures are never one variable — but four percent off the top of a twelve-million-person funnel is a lot of variable.

Read every Berlin culture story of the next two years through this number. The scene is not being killed by gentrification alone or by politics alone — the subsidy was tourist volume, and the subsidy is shrinking. Practical read: the venues that survive will be the ones with local weeknight audiences rather than weekend arrivals, and that changes what gets booked. Expect longer residencies, smaller rooms, less flying-in. If you are planning anything in Berlin, price for a local audience, not an inbound one.
