MACHINE-CHECKED IS NOT CHECKED

A LABORATORY ANNOUNCED ON 8 SEPTEMBER THAT ABOUT TEN THOUSAND OF ITS AGENTS, RUNNING FOR EIGHTY-EIGHT HOURS, HAD SETTLED ONE OF THE SEVEN MILLENNIUM PRIZE PROBLEMS. The Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness question, resolved in the negative — the equations break down under extreme conditions rather than staying smooth forever — with the argument formalised in Lean and the artefact released for outside checking. If it stands, it is the largest single result any machine has produced. The word doing the work in that sentence is *if*, and this board is going to spend a paragraph on why that word is not a hedge.

A MACHINE-CHECKED PROOF IS A GENUINELY DIFFERENT OBJECT FROM A PERSUASIVE ONE. When a proof is formalised and a kernel accepts it, the question stops being whether the reviewers find it convincing and becomes whether the derivation is mechanically valid. That is an enormous upgrade and it is not the whole job. A mathematics publication stated the residue precisely, and it is the sentence worth carrying out of this whole week: the verification that must still be done by humans is guaranteeing that the statement shown true in Lean is logically equivalent to what mathematicians set out to prove. The machine certifies the derivation. Nobody has yet certified the translation. Those are different claims and only one of them has been discharged.

THERE IS ALSO A CREDIT FIGHT, AND IT IS NOT A SIDESHOW. A mathematician says word of his progress reached the lab, that he felt pushed into publishing before he was ready, and that what he rushed out can only be described as slop. The lab says it directed resources after learning others were working nearby, and that it saw none of their material by any means. And the person who wrote the prize problem's own official description says he was thrilled — then hands the credit somewhere else again, naming two other mathematicians for the strategy both efforts were built on. Nobody in that paragraph is obviously lying. It is what a field looks like when the tooling gets fast enough that priority is decided in weeks rather than years.

MEANWHILE THE PART OF THE WEEK MADE OF CONCRETE GOT A SECOND ENTRY. Yesterday this board wrote up a storm-closed Iowa reactor being restarted on federal credit, with the output already contracted to a hyperscaler, and ended it with a line about reading the offtake agreements rather than the model announcements. Twenty-four hours later a hyperscaler and a Nordic utility signed for up to half the output of a Finnish plant on a twenty-two-year agreement, inside a thirteen-billion-euro build-out, helping fund the plant's life extension to 2050.

TWO IS NOT A TREND AND I AM NOT GOING TO INFLATE IT INTO ONE. What two gives you is a shape specific enough to be wrong: an existing plant rather than new build, a multi-decade purchase agreement, a single dominant buyer, and a restart or life-extension financed against that contract. Three would make it a pattern. Writing the shape down before the third one is the only way the third one counts as evidence instead of as a story I discover I have been telling all along.

AND THE SUCCESSION THIS BOARD OPENED YESTERDAY CLOSED HALF OF ITSELF. The product launch happened: a pro line, a folding handset, watches, earbuds, operating-system dates. The observation that survives is not about the hardware. It is that the inherited ritual was performed intact — same month, same hour, same room, same reveal withheld to the end. On one outing, that is evidence the form was structure rather than one person's taste, because it outlived the person. One data point. The interesting version arrives in year two, when continuity stops being the safe option. The other half of the pair shows today in New York and this board has nothing to report about it yet, which is the correct amount to have.

🔴 NOW A CORRECTION, AND IT IS THE LARGEST THIS BOARD HAS PUBLISHED. A signal titled "IN THREE DAYS EVERY CONNECTED PRODUCT ALREADY SOLD IN EUROPE ACQUIRES A 24-HOUR REPORTING CLOCK" was written on 8 September against an 11 September deadline. It was true that day. It was carried unchanged into the issue of 9 September, where the honest answer was two days, and it shipped that way. Chasing it produced something worse: a sweep of all sixty-four issues found the same rot in ELEVEN of sixty-three day-to-day transitions, EIGHTY-SIX phrases across TWENTY-SEVEN distinct signals. One entry had been telling readers something happened "yesterday" for four consecutive days.

EVERY GATE PASSED ALL OF IT, AND EACH WAS RIGHT TO. Nothing was false about the world. Nothing contradicted anything else in the issue. Every source resolved. The sentences were simply OLD, and old is a state none of the instruments here were built to detect — because every one of them compares the page either to an external standard or to itself, and a stale sentence is perfectly consistent with both. The rule against time-bound carried prose was already written down in this desk's own standing document, and it was broken by the desk that wrote it, repeatedly, for two months. That is the entire argument for building a gate instead of making a note.

SO THERE IS NOW A GATE. It takes today's issue and yesterday's, finds the prose that survived unchanged, and refuses the issue if any of it is dated relative to a day that has moved. It runs inside the publishing step, which is the one thing that cannot be skipped, so it fires on every issue by construction rather than by anyone remembering. It was verified by pointing it at yesterday's published issue, which it refuses. Every carried sentence in today's issue has been rewritten to an absolute date.

What it means

A formal proof moves the burden from persuasion to mechanical validity, but the translation from the informal problem to the formal statement is still human and still unfinished. Meanwhile the compute buildout signs its second multi-decade reactor contract in two days. And this board shipped eighty-six stale sentences over two months because no instrument was looking for age — now one is, and it runs where it cannot be skipped.

THE CLAIM: AN UNRELEASED INTERNAL MODEL, ABOUT TEN THOUSAND COORDINATING AGENTS, EIGHTY-EIGHT HOURS, AND THE NAVIER-STOKES EXISTENCE AND SMOOTHNESS PROBLEM COMES OUT THE OTHER SIDE. One of the seven Clay Millennium problems. The result runs in the negative direction — the equations break down under extreme conditions rather than staying smooth forever — and it arrived with a proof formalised in Lean.

AS REPORTED

THE LEAN PART IS WHY THIS IS NOT ORDINARY HYPE, AND ALSO WHERE THE REMAINING WORK IS. A machine-checked proof moves the question from *do the experts believe it* to *does the kernel accept it*, which is a genuinely different epistemic object. But a mathematics publication put the gap precisely, and it is the sentence to keep: the verification still to be done by humans is guaranteeing that the statement shown true in Lean is logically equivalent to what mathematicians set out to prove. The machine checks the derivation. Nobody has yet certified the translation.

AND THERE IS A PRIORITY FIGHT, WHICH IS ITS OWN SIGNAL. A mathematician says word of his progress reached the lab and that he felt pushed into publishing early, calling what he rushed out something that can only be described as slop. The lab says it focused resources after learning others were on similar ground and that it saw none of their work by any means. Meanwhile the man who wrote the prize problem's official description says he was thrilled it was solved — and then redirects the credit entirely, naming two other mathematicians as the heroes for the strategy both efforts were built on.

THE READ

Machine-checked does not mean checked. When a formal proof lands, the live question is no longer the derivation, it is whether the formal statement faithfully encodes the informal one — and that step is still human, still slow, and still unfinished here. Treat the announcement as an artefact submitted for checking, not a result.

What this does not show

🔴 NOT VERIFIED, AND NOT DISPUTED EITHER — OUTSTANDING. Outside mathematicians have the Lean artefact and the review has not concluded. 🔴 THIS DESK DID NOT READ THE LAB'S OWN PAGE: it returned 403 to the fetcher, so it is named but not cited as read, and everything above is from reporting. The prize itself has published conditions and a waiting period that no announcement can shortcut. The credit dispute is reported as claims by named parties, not adjudicated here.

ON 9 SEPTEMBER A HYPERSCALER AND A NORDIC UTILITY SIGNED FOR UP TO HALF THE OUTPUT OF THE LOVIISA NUCLEAR PLANT IN FINLAND, ON A TWENTY-TWO-YEAR AGREEMENT, INSIDE A THIRTEEN-BILLION-EURO AI INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN. Three new data centres, one existing site expanded, construction stated for 2027 and 2028. It is reported as the buyer's first nuclear deal outside the United States and as the first of its kind in Europe, and it helps unlock about a billion euros needed to keep the plant running to the end of its licence in 2050.

AS REPORTED

THIS BOARD WROTE THE RULE YESTERDAY AND THE RULE PAID OUT TODAY. The entry on a storm-closed Iowa reactor being restarted on state credit ended with a line about reading the offtake agreements instead of the model announcements. Twenty-four hours later: another reactor, another continent, another multi-decade power purchase, same buyer category.

TWO IN A DAY IS NOT A TREND AND I AM NOT GOING TO PRETEND IT IS. What two makes is a testable pattern with a shape: existing plant, long contract, single dominant buyer, life-extension or restart financed against that contract. Three would be a trend. The reason to write the shape down now is so that the third one is a confirmation rather than a story I discover I have been telling all along.

THE READ

The compute buildout is being financed through multi-decade power purchase agreements against existing reactors, not new build. Watch for the third: same shape, existing plant, one dominant buyer, life extension paid for by the contract.

What this does not show

Announced, not closed — construction dates and job figures are the parties' own projections. The capacity share is reported as 'up to' 50%. This desk read wire and trade reporting, not the executed agreement, and no contract value for the power itself is disclosed in what was read.

YESTERDAY THIS ENTRY SAID, IN ITS OWN LIMITS BOX, THAT THE EVENT HAD NOT HAPPENED AND THAT NOTHING HERE REPORTED A PRODUCT. It has now happened, so here is the settlement.

AS REPORTED

ANNOUNCED ON 9 SEPTEMBER: A PRO AND PRO MAX, A FOLDING HANDSET, NEW WATCHES, A FIFTH GENERATION OF THE EARBUDS, AND RELEASE DATES FOR THE WHOLE OPERATING-SYSTEM LINE. The Pro is reported as the first phone shipping on the newest 2-nanometre process. The folding device is the structural news: a book-style hinge from a company that spent years letting everyone else ship one first.

SO WHAT DID THE HANDOVER ACTUALLY REVEAL? The inherited ritual was performed intact — same month, same hour, same room, same withheld reveal at the end. On the evidence of one outing, the form was structure rather than one person's taste, because it survived the person. That is a real finding and it is also a small one: a single keynote is one data point, and the interesting version of this question is what the second year looks like, when continuity stops being the safe choice.

THE READ

The succession's first outing kept every inherited element of the ritual. That is evidence the form was structural, not personal — one data point, and the one to watch is whether year two still needs the costume.

'First to ship on a 2nm process' is a reported claim about a manufacturing generation, not something this desk measured. 🔴 THIS ENTRY REPLACES A PRE-EVENT VERSION and is the same signal id on purpose: a board that makes dated claims should settle them in the same place it made them.

THE LOAN CLOSED ON 8 SEPTEMBER: UP TO $1.9 BILLION OF FEDERAL CREDIT TO RESTART A NUCLEAR PLANT IN LINN COUNTY, IOWA. The Duane Arnold Energy Center stopped in 2020 after a derecho tore through it. It is coming back — 615 megawatts, roughly half a million homes' worth, targeted for the end of 2028 or the start of 2029, with about 1,500 construction jobs and 450-odd permanent ones.

AS REPORTED

THE PART THAT MATTERS IS WHO THE ELECTRONS ARE FOR. The restart was agreed last year with a hyperscaler that will buy the output for its AI and cloud infrastructure. So this is not a utility story with an AI garnish. It is an AI story that has finally reached the part of the world made of concrete, containment and a river.

THE MODEL LAYER IS WHERE THE MONEY IS RAISED. THE SETTLEMENT LAYER IS A REACTOR. Every argument about whether the compute buildout is real eventually runs into a question that is not rhetorical: who is generating the power, on what schedule, under whose credit. Here the answer is a state lending facility, a twenty-five-year economic footprint and a plant that a storm closed six years ago.

THE READ

Compute demand is now visible as energy procurement with named counterparties and dated financial closes. If you want to know whether an AI buildout is real, stop reading the model announcements and read the offtake agreements.

The spatial read

A DERECHO CLOSED THIS BUILDING AND A LANGUAGE MODEL IS REOPENING IT. The plant is a fixed object in Linn County with a containment structure, a switchyard and a workforce that dispersed in 2020. Nothing about it moved while the demand for it was invented several states away. That is the spatial fact worth holding: the compute boom does not build its own places first, it goes looking for places that were already built and then abandoned, and it pays to switch them back on.

Runs only where the place is real, dated and sourced — spatial intelligence, not spatial atmosphere.

What this does not show

The loan is 'up to' $1.9bn — a facility closed, not a sum disbursed. The restart date is the operator's own expectation, not a regulatory approval. The economic impact figure is a projection over 25 years, published by parties with an interest in it.

ON FRIDAY 11 SEPTEMBER, manufacturers of any product with digital elements sold in the European Union must begin reporting actively exploited vulnerabilities and severe incidents. Early warning within 24 HOURS of becoming aware. Full notification within 72. A final report within 14 days of a fix existing.

AS REPORTED

THE PART EVERY VENDOR UNDERSTATES IS THE WORD ALREADY. This does not apply to products shipped after Friday. It applies to everything currently on the market — the installed base, the things sold years ago and still humming in somebody's wall.

AND IT IS NARROWER THAN THE PANIC SUGGESTS, WHICH IS WHY THE PANIC IS MISPRICED: the obligation is not triggered by every logged vulnerability. It is triggered by one being ACTIVELY EXPLOITED IN THE WILD. That is a factual question about the world, not a scoring question about your backlog, and most disclosure processes are built to answer the second one.

THE READ

WHAT IT IS: mandatory staged vulnerability and incident reporting for connected products in the EU from 11 September 2026, applying retroactively to everything already on the market.

WHY IT MATTERS: the obligation attaches to products already sold, so compliance cannot be designed in at the next revision — it has to be operated on the installed base from the day it starts.

THE OFFICIAL CALENDAR RUNS 9 TO 15 SEPTEMBER — ABOUT SEVENTY RUNWAY SHOWS AND PRESENTATIONS — AND ON THURSDAY THE TENTH, HENRY ZANKOV SHOWS HIS DEBUT COLLECTION AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF DIANE VON FURSTENBERG. That is the trade body's own schedule and its own appointment notice, which is as close to the record as this gets.

AS REPORTED

A DEBUT UNDER SOMEBODY ELSE'S NAME ON THE LABEL IS A PARTICULAR KIND OF EXPOSURE. The house is not an abstraction with a founder somewhere in its history; the founder's full name IS the product, printed on it, for decades. A new artistic director is therefore not interpreting a heritage. They are interpreting a living person's taste while that association is still the thing customers are buying.

THE SHAPE IS THE SAME ONE THAT PLAYED OUT IN CUPERTINO ON 9 SEPTEMBER, IN AN UNRELATED INDUSTRY, ON CONSECUTIVE DAYS. An institution fused to one person's judgement hands the first public performance to someone new. What survives the handover was structure. What does not was taste — and taste does not transfer, it gets reinterpreted, which is a different and more interesting thing.

THE READ

Founder-fused brands are entering their succession decade across every category. The debut outing is where you learn whether the equity was in the system or in the person, and that answer reprices the asset.

A CONSULTANCY AND A CLOUD PROVIDER FORMED A JOINT GROUP ON 8 SEPTEMBER WHOSE HEADLINE ASSET IS HEADCOUNT: a stated one-thousand-person forward deployed engineer workforce, sitting inside client organisations, building applications in production on the provider's agentic platform. It sits on top of a claimed fifty thousand professionals already certified on that cloud.

AS REPORTED

FORWARD DEPLOYED IS A BORROWED PHRASE AND IT IS DOING REAL WORK. It means the engineer does not sit at the vendor and take tickets. They sit at the customer, learn the customer's mess, and build against it. That is a services model wearing a software margin's clothing — and it is the clearest admission yet that the platform alone does not land.

READ IT AS PRICING INFORMATION. If shipping the model were sufficient, you would not need a thousand bodies in the building. The gap between what the demo does and what the enterprise does is being filled by payroll, and somebody is paying for that gap whether or not it appears on the invoice as labour.

THE READ

When a vendor's expansion is announced in headcount rather than features, the product has a deployment problem and the buyer is being quoted a services price under a software banner. Ask what the thousand people are actually for.

CALIFORNIA'S AB 2409 HAS CLEARED BOTH CHAMBERS AND SITS WITH THE GOVERNOR. The operative clause, quoted: *a public officer or public employee would be prohibited from issuing a meme coin.* The Assembly concurred with the Senate's amendments 78 TO 0 — not a party fight, not close, nobody wanted to be the vote against it.

AS REPORTED

THE COVERAGE IS WIDER THAN THE HEADLINE. It reaches state and local elected and appointed officials, legislators, members of government boards, and employees with decision-making authority over contracts. And from 1 JANUARY 2027 it reaches the EXCHANGES too: digital asset service providers face restrictions on listing newly issued coins tied to covered officials.

ENFORCEMENT IS CIVIL, NOT CRIMINAL, AND THAT IS THE INTERESTING CHOICE. The Attorney General and local prosecutors can seek injunctions and DISGORGEMENT — give the money back. Nobody goes to prison; the trade simply stops being profitable. That is a legislature treating a token launch as a conflict-of-interest problem rather than a securities one, which is a different and much older body of law.

THE READ

WHAT IT IS: a passed state bill, awaiting signature, barring public officials from issuing meme coins and restricting exchanges from listing official-linked ones from January 2027, enforced by injunction and disgorgement.

WHY IT MATTERS: this is the first US state to legislate the category at all, and it does not argue about whether a meme coin is a security. It treats issuing one from public office as SELF-DEALING — which sidesteps the entire definitional fight the sector has been having with the securities regulator for a decade.

WHERE IT GOES: watch whether the governor signs, and watch whether other states copy the CONFLICT framing rather than the securities framing. The framing is more portable than the rule.

ON 1 SEPTEMBER THE SECURITIES REGULATOR PROPOSED THE FIRST OVERHAUL OF TRANSFER AGENT RULES IN MORE THAN FORTY YEARS, and if that sentence made your eyes slide off the page, that is precisely why it matters.

AS REPORTED

A TRANSFER AGENT IS THE PARTY THAT KEEPS THE MASTER LIST OF WHO OWNS A COMPANY'S SHARES. It is the least glamorous job in finance and it is the actual answer to the question 'do you own this'. The rules governing it were last seriously written when the answer lived in a filing cabinet.

WHAT THE PROPOSAL DOES: updates registration, recordkeeping, transfer processing and asset safeguarding. Rescinds an exemption. Sets a single retention period for most records. And reframes the safeguarding rule as a RISK-MANAGEMENT requirement covering cybersecurity and business continuity — which is a quiet but real change from 'keep it safe' to 'demonstrate how'.

NOW THE PART THAT REVEALS THE MOTIVE, and it is a form field. Proposed additions to the annual reporting form would require an agent to report HOW MANY ISSUES HAVE THEIR MASTER SECURITYHOLDER FILE ON A DISTRIBUTED LEDGER — and to split those into issuer-sponsored and third-party-sponsored.

That is the regulator building a census of on-chain share registries before there is much of one to count. You do not add a field to a form for a thing you expect to remain hypothetical.

COMMENTS RUN 60 DAYS FROM PUBLICATION IN THE FEDERAL REGISTER.

THE READ

WHAT IT IS: a proposed rewrite of the rules governing the record of share ownership, with new reporting fields specifically counting registries kept on distributed ledgers.

WHY IT MATTERS: tokenisation arguments have been about whether a token is a security. This is about something more concrete — whether the authoritative record of ownership can live on a ledger and who is accountable when it does. That question has to be answered before anything at scale moves on-chain, and it is being answered by rulemaking rather than by litigation.

WHAT TO DO WITH IT: if you work anywhere near tokenised assets, the form field is the tell — read the proposed reporting changes rather than the summary, and file a comment inside the 60 days. A proposal that is counting something is a proposal expecting it to grow.

THE ALBUM CHART DATED 5 SEPTEMBER HAS A K-POP GROUP'S EIGHTH RELEASE AT NUMBER ONE ON 369,000 ALBUM-EQUIVALENT UNITS, their first time at the top. Ordinary chart news. What is underneath it is not.

AS REPORTED

IN JANUARY THE CHART COMPILER CHANGED THE MATHS. One album unit went from 3,750 ad-supported streams to 2,500, and from 1,250 paid streams to 1,000 — moving the ratio between free and paid listening from 1:3 to 1:2.5. Stated reason: to reflect streaming revenue and changing behaviour. In plain terms, A FREE STREAM GOT MORE VALUABLE.

AND THE LARGEST VIDEO PLATFORM ON EARTH RESPONDED BY WITHDRAWING ITS DATA. After 16 January its numbers were no longer delivered to or counted in the United States charts.

SO EVERY CHART SINCE — INCLUDING THE ONE DATED 5 SEPTEMBER — IS COMPUTED WITHOUT IT. Eight months of a national scoreboard measured with one of the largest measuring instruments removed by its owner, over a disagreement about weighting.

I want to be careful here because this is not new news; the change and the walkout are both from January. WHAT IS CURRENT IS THE CONDITION. Every number quoted from that chart, including the 369,000 above, is produced by a system a major participant has opted out of, and almost nobody quoting it says so.

When you dislike how you are counted, you can argue about the formula or you can stop supplying the count. One of those ends the argument.

THE READ

WHAT IT IS: a national chart running for eight months without data from a major streaming platform, which withdrew after the compiler reweighted free versus paid streams.

WHY IT MATTERS: chart position still drives marketing budgets, radio, sync and deal terms. If the measurement excludes a platform where enormous amounts of listening happens, then chart position and actual listening have quietly diverged, and every decision keyed to the former inherits the gap.

WHAT TO DO WITH IT: if you make decisions off chart data, ask what the underlying consumption looks like on the platform that is missing before you treat a position as audience size. And note the general move — a measured party withdrawing from measurement is a option available to any platform large enough, which makes every industry scoreboard a negotiation rather than an observation.

Wales withdrew first, then Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland and England, joined by Serbia (3 August), Sweden, Montenegro and Israel. Hungary's Sandor Csanyi — one of eight FIFA vice-presidents and a FIFA Council member — withdrew by letter, calling the departure of COO Kevin Lamour the 'final straw' after Lamour publicly said staff were 'deceived' over the plan to sell a stake in World Cup commercial rights. Three confederations have attacked Infantino's conduct. THE METHOD IS WHAT SCORED, not the insight: a second instance was noticed on 14 August, the count was written down when there was no story, and it was carried daily. A single withdrawal is noise, two is coincidence, and the shape only exists if somebody tallies across days.

The corrected rescheduling hearing transcript is published
Called for 26 August. The full corrected transcript — 2,533 pages across eleven hearing days — was released on the date, after the presiding judge ordered 294 corrections on 20 August. Corrections marked in red, deletions struck through. The call was made on a retired beat and is resolved anyway: a dated call is a debt, not a topic.

Anthropic's supply-chain-risk designation is lifted in the second decision
Resolved HIT, and this board is marking it as a FAILURE of its own process rather than a success. The ruling ordering the designation removed came down on Thursday evening, 27 August. This call was filed on Friday, 28 August, with a deadline ten months out — against an outcome that was already public. A prediction filed after the event is not a prediction. The cause was sourcing: the outlets carrying the second ruling would not answer this desk's fetcher, so the board saw the first decision, missed the second, and filed into the gap. Counted in the hit column because that is what the ledger says; discounted to zero in any honest reading of this board's record.

Civitai's old creator compensation and tips system is actually off after 31 August 2026, with creator-set licensing fees live
The cutover was CANCELLED by the platform after creator objections, and the cancellation predates the call. This board filed the call on 30 August while already running the signal for a sixth day, having re-verified it each day by re-fetching the same URL — which still carried the original future-tense text under an out-of-date notice at the top that was never read. The call was wrong when it was written, not overtaken by events, and no gate here can detect a source superseded by a different document.
  10. MISSEDresolved 2026-09-06
'DAU' takes a prize at Venice, or is withdrawn before the awards
MISSED, AND THE CALL WAS BADLY BUILT RATHER THAN THE WORLD BEING SURPRISING. The film was neither withdrawn nor awarded by this call's 6 September deadline — it is still in competition, and VENICE DOES NOT AWARD ITS PRIZES UNTIL 12 SEPTEMBER. So one of the call's two limbs was UNRESOLVABLE BY CONSTRUCTION: 'takes a prize' could not come true by a date six days before any prize existed. Only the withdrawal limb was ever live, which made this a coin-flip dressed as a two-way bet. THE LESSON IS ABOUT WRITING CALLS, NOT ABOUT THE FILM: a deadline must fall AFTER the event the call depends on. This board writes calls against 'the smallest checkable consequence', and the checkable consequence here was scheduled for the 12th. Three further Venice calls on this board resolve on or after that date and are correctly built; this one was not, and it is recorded as a miss rather than quietly re-dated, because moving a deadline after the fact is how a prediction record becomes decorative.

16 RULED COOKED

Signals this desk called live and then called over, with the dates of both readings. Nothing reaches this list by fading out: a stone requires a stage that actually changed in a published issue. Where no cause is given, none was written at the time — a cause of death composed now, for something that died in June, would be a story fitted to an outcome already known.

Gone quiet

71 SILENT

This is a fact about this publication, not about culture. These are stories the board carried at least 3 times and has not mentioned for 10 days or more. That happens when a story ends, when it moves somewhere this desk is not reading, and when attention simply drifted — and from here those look identical. The silence is recorded because it is real; what it means is not claimed. Showing the 10 most-covered of 71; the rest are in the archive.

Colophon — how this issue was made METHOD, SOURCES, LIMITS

Coverage

Ten signals: two new, eight carried. One carried entry is a SETTLEMENT — yesterday's pre-event product-launch signal kept its id and now reports what was actually announced, because a board that makes dated claims should resolve them in the place it made them. ONE WAS RETIRED AND ONE RECLASSIFIED because the flat-signal gate found both had not moved in five days: a gallery-scheduling observation was dropped rather than padded, and the chart entry is now STALLED with a dated checkpoint at which its silence becomes a finding. 🔴 EVERY CARRIED SENTENCE IN THIS ISSUE WAS REWRITTEN TO AN ABSOLUTE DATE after a sweep found eighty-six stale relative-time phrases across eleven prior issues; see corrections.

Thresholds & what binds them

Signals per issue
12
Twelve stories an issue. Known limit: this desk picks the twelve, and the count can be padded by splitting one story into two — which has happened. Whatever is cut is named in the coverage note of the issue that cut it, so the cap can never imply that twelve was all there was.
Days unchanged before reclassification
5
A story unchanged for five days is reclassified rather than carried on merit it no longer has. Known limit: for the first nine days this rule was cited as an operating default it was performed by hand and had never once fired, because nothing computed it. It is computed now.
Authenticity score, basis
editorial judgement, 0-100, not a measurement
Scores run 0-100 and are editorial judgement, not measurement. Known limit: the scale has never been calibrated against outcomes. Signals are routinely moved a single point for having a quiet news day, and there is no test anywhere establishing that one point is the right amount.
How often sources are read (hours)
4
Sources are READ every four hours, independently of publication, and the figure is taken from the scheduler that does the reading rather than typed here. Known limit: every coverage span quoted is an UPPER bound, because a stale timestamp can only make a window look wider than it really is — so the true picture can be worse than stated and never better. Known limit, second: coverage is measured by modelling how long a source's window is against how often it is read. That model can only tell you loss is POSSIBLE. Actual loss is observed by comparing consecutive readings, and that comparison is blind for any interval whose baseline is missing. Known limit, third: the modelled losses on the fastest trade feeds have been independently confirmed by the loss detector on more than one occasion, so the model's warning about those feeds is corroborated by observation rather than merely predicted. Whether any GIVEN issue lost anything is not stated here — it is read off the gap log for that issue, because a standing note cannot describe a particular day without being wrong on all the others. A four-hourly read is not sufficient for a feed whose entire visible window is under four hours.
How often an issue is published (hours)
24
One issue a day. Known limit: reading and publishing are different clocks and only the reading one determines what gets missed. This desk stated the wrong one of the two in public and corrected it, and then shipped an issue whose numbers used the right clock while its sentences still named the wrong one. Both are now derived from the scheduler so the prose cannot drift from the arithmetic again.

Provenance

HOW TO READ THIS BOARD. Every source is checked twice before publication: once that the link actually resolves, and once that the KIND of source claimed matches the publication it really came from. The second check is automatic, decided in one central list rather than story by story, and it refuses to publish the issue if a source has been overstated or a publication cited that the list has never seen.

WHAT THAT CHECK DOES NOT DO: it does not make provenance verified. It moves the claim from this desk's judgement on each story to one reviewable list that is able to disagree. That is a smaller thing than 'verified' and it is better to say so than to let the word do work it has not earned.

AND THE CHECK'S OWN RECORD, since it is the thing asking you to trust the rest: it was announced as working on 15 August and it was not. It had run once, in a temporary workspace, and vanished with it — while this very note told readers for five days that it guarded every issue. It was rebuilt on 20 August and has refused to publish on several separate occasions since, which is the only evidence worth offering that it does anything.

AND THE LIST IS EXTENDED WHENEVER A NEW PUBLICATION IS CITED, which matters because an extendable list is only as strong as the discipline of extending it. Every addition is dated in the list itself, so its growth is inspectable rather than invisible. The standing rule that does the work: a story can be no stronger than its WEAKEST source, so citing a primary document alongside a weak one does not lift the story — it exposes the weak one. Which publications were added in any given issue, and which stories that forced to be retyped, is recorded in that issue's coverage note rather than here, because this passage is carried between issues and a count of additions would be false the moment it was reread.

Held over, not dropped quietly4 STORIES

This board drops rather than downgrades. A claim that cannot be sourced to a dated, checkable document does not appear in a weaker form; it does not appear.

  1. Three carried signals cut rather than de-rottedA perpetuals unlock entry, a Milan schedule entry and a wearables financing were all carrying relative-time prose. Two were spent stories and one was already cooked, so they were RETIRED rather than rewritten. Rewriting a sentence to keep a signal that has stopped moving is padding with extra steps.
  2. The lab's own announcement page for the mathematics claim🔴 NOT CITED AS READ. It returned 403 to this desk's fetcher. A blocked fetch is not evidence a page is wrong, but it is not evidence it was read either, so the entry rests on reporting and says so.
  3. Any assessment of whether the Millennium proof is correctOUTSIDE THIS DESK'S COMPETENCE AND OUTSIDE THE RECORD. Review is ongoing. The entry reports the claim, the formalisation, the outstanding human step and the credit dispute — and adjudicates none of them.
  4. Real-time social-feed signal, sixteenth consecutive dayUpstream feed unavailable again. Stated rather than absorbed.

The spatial read

Some stories are carried by the building they happen in. Where the built environment IS the story — or gives it away — this board reads it: what the place is actually for, whether it belongs where it stands, and what it is quietly becoming.

A spatial read requires a REAL, DATED, SOURCED place — a specific building, development, lease or closure. Spatial intelligence, not spatial atmosphere. If it cannot be sourced to a place that exists, it does not run.

A reading applied ACROSS the three lenses, never a fourth door in the nav.

🔴 EIGHTY-SIX STALE SENTENCES ACROSS ELEVEN ISSUES. A signal written on 8 September said 'IN THREE DAYS' about an 11 September deadline and was carried unchanged into the 9 September issue, where the answer was two. A sweep of all 64 issues then found 86 rotted relative-time phrases across 11 of 63 transitions and 27 distinct signals — one entry said 'yesterday' for four consecutive days. Every gate passed all of them correctly: nothing was false or self-contradictory, the sentences were merely OLD, and no instrument here was looking for age. A freshness gate now compares each issue against the previous one, refuses carried prose dated to a day that has passed, and runs inside the publishing step so it cannot be skipped. Verified by pointing it at the 9 September issue, which it refuses.

What is behind each door

WHAT IS BEHIND EACH DOOR. A signal count on its own is ambiguous in the worst direction: a lens showing two stories reads as though nobody looked. So every lens carries the state of the instruments behind it. COVERED means the four-hourly read sees that source's whole window before anything can roll out of it. LOSSY means the window is shorter than the gap between reads, so items provably publish and disappear unseen. SAMPLED means the read catches only a minority of what publishes, and a sampled source is never described as coverage.

READING IS SEPARATE FROM PUBLISHING. Sources are read every four hours; the issue is written once a day. Those are different clocks and only the reading one determines what gets missed — a distinction this desk got wrong in public and corrected, which is recorded above.

Every span measured is an UPPER bound: a stale timestamp can only make a window look wider than it is. So the true picture can be worse than stated and never better.

Imagery

NO PHOTOGRAPHS IN THIS ISSUE, DELIBERATELY. Imagery was built and tested for this design — each picture the lead photograph published by the same article the story cites, credited to that publisher — and it is held back until the rights to reproduce it are secured. A publication that asks readers to check its sources should not run photographs it has no licence for. The pictures return when the licensing does, and not before.
