A SPIDER-MAN FILM JUST PASSED STAR WARS, ONE SEAT AT A TIME

ON SUNDAY 20 SEPTEMBER A SPIDER-MAN FILM WENT TO THE TOP OF THE ALL-TIME DOMESTIC BOX-OFFICE CHART, AND IT GOT THERE THE SLOW WAY — ONE SEAT, ONE SHOWTIME, ONE DARK ROOM FULL OF STRANGERS AT A TIME. Spider-Man: Brand New Day stood at $944,417,445 after fifty-two days in release. The film it displaced was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had held the top line since 2015 at $936,662,225. Below them now: Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avatar.

READ THE NUMBER CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU QUOTE IT. It is unadjusted for inflation, so on a real-money basis older films rank far higher, and it is domestic only, not worldwide. This is not the most-watched film in history. It is the largest domestic gross ever recorded in nominal dollars, which is a narrower claim and still a remarkable one — because it happened in the format a decade of commentary spent burying.

AND IT DID NOT HAPPEN ALONE. On the same Sunday The Odyssey had taken $609,811,695 across sixty-six days. A new Resident Evil opened to $60,152,878 in three. Two films past half a billion dollars in a single late summer, and a franchise opening stacked on top of them. Eight weeks in, the Spider-Man film was still taking close to two million dollars on a Sunday. That is not a streaming premiere with a theatrical window bolted on for prestige. That is people choosing, week after week, to leave the house, buy a seat and sit through a film at a time somebody else set.

THIS BOARD HAS SPENT A WEEK ON ONE IDEA and the box office just supplied the largest proof of it available. The scarce thing is no longer the content; it is the room and the crowd in it. A sold-out tapestry you enter from the wrong end. A museum built at the scale of a shopping centre to argue that comics are art. A club on Mission Street reopening one test weekend at a time. And now the biggest shared audience of the decade, assembled on a schedule, in the dark.

THE LUCAS MUSEUM OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE PUBLIC ON TUESDAY 22 SEPTEMBER in Exposition Park, after an opening night on the 19th. Three hundred thousand square feet by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec, more than thirteen hundred works in the first hang, and a hanging list that puts Artemisia Gentileschi and Frida Kahlo in the same institution as Frank Frazetta and Robert Crumb. The argument that a picture telling a story is one category, not a hierarchy, has been settled by a building rather than won in a seminar.

IN LONDON, THE DESIGN FESTIVAL CLOSED ON SUNDAY WITH TWO IDEAS WORTH STEALING. On the Strand, at Aldwych, the festival's landmark project was the Pangolin Shield by Studio Saar with the engineers Atelier One — a shelter made from traditional Indian bamboo police shields and palm-leaf rain covers, shaped after the pangolin, which the festival's guide calls the world's most trafficked mammal. Equipment built to hold a crowd back, re-hung as somewhere a crowd could stand together, on one of the city's ceremonial routes. And in Wapping, a hydraulic power station built in the 1890s opened to the public for the first time in thirteen years — not for its machinery but for sound, a twelve-speaker system carrying work by Max Cooper and a journey down the Humber estuary by the sound recordist Chris Watson. A dormant industrial shell became a listening room for five days. Neither made a new object. Both changed what an existing one means.

THE MUSIC BUSINESS IS STILL REBUILDING ITS COUNTING. Twenty-seven companies, the three majors among them, signed the Streaming Integrity Initiative on 14 September: identity checks for uploaders, content vetting, and a shared blocklist so an account thrown off one service cannot walk to the next. Set that beside the box office. One industry is having to prove its numbers are real; the other just posted the largest number in its history, and every dollar of it corresponds to a person who was physically in a seat.

TWO STORIES FROM OUTSIDE THE CULTURE PAGES STILL SET THE TERMS. The advertising-technology remedies leave the ad business whole under a six-year monitor, which is the plumbing every media budget runs through, and the securities regulator's five-year exemption for trading tokenised shares sets the rules for a market many brands already market into. Both land on the people who pay for attention.

THE SO-WHAT. The attention economy spent ten years telling you that scheduled, collective, physical experiences were legacy formats to be harvested on the way down. This week the largest domestic box-office run ever recorded, a museum opening at civic scale and a power station reopened for sound all say the opposite. If you are placing a brand this autumn, the audience you cannot buy anywhere else is the one sitting in a room at the same time as everyone around it.

What it means

The largest domestic box-office run ever recorded — unadjusted — happened in a format commentary spent a decade burying, eight weeks at a time, in rooms. Scheduled, collective, physical viewing is where the biggest shared audience just assembled.

A SPIDER-MAN FILM JUST PASSED STAR WARS, ONE SEAT AT A TIME

CRESTING·SOURCES: COMPILATION·film·DAY 1 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

AS OF SUNDAY 20 SEPTEMBER, SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY SITS AT THE TOP OF THE ALL-TIME DOMESTIC CHART — $944,417,445 AFTER FIFTY-TWO DAYS IN RELEASE. The film it displaced is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, at $936,662,225 since 2015. Below them: Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avatar.

AS REPORTED2 para

IT IS NOT ALONE ON THE CHART. The same Sunday, The Odyssey had taken $609,811,695 across sixty-six days, and a new Resident Evil opened to $60,152,878 in three. Two films past half a billion in a single late summer, and a third franchise opening on top of them.

EIGHT WEEKS IN, THE SPIDER-MAN FILM WAS STILL TAKING NEARLY TWO MILLION DOLLARS ON A SUNDAY. Every dollar of the record is a seat somebody sat in, in a dark room, at a set time, with strangers. The format a decade of commentary buried has just produced the biggest run it has ever recorded.

THE READ1 para

The largest domestic run ever recorded happened in a format everyone was told was dying, eight weeks at a time, in rooms. For anyone planning attention, the read is that scheduled, collective, physical viewing is not a legacy channel being milked — it is where the single biggest shared audience of the decade just assembled.

What this does not show

Figures are unadjusted for inflation; on an inflation-adjusted basis older films rank far higher and this is NOT the most-attended film in history. They are studio-reported grosses as compiled by a tracker, not audited figures. The ranking is domestic only — North America — not worldwide. The date the film crossed the previous record is not given in the charts read and is not printed.

LONDON'S DESIGN WEEK BUILT A SHELTER OUT OF POLICE SHIELDS AND OPENED A POWER STATION SHUT FOR THIRTEEN YEARS

COOKED·SOURCES: JOURNALISM·design·DAY 1 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL CLOSED ON SUNDAY 20 SEPTEMBER, AND ITS TWO BEST IDEAS WERE BOTH ABOUT WHAT A BUILDING IS FOR.

AS REPORTED3 para

ON THE STRAND, AT ALDWYCH, THE FESTIVAL'S LANDMARK PROJECT: THE PANGOLIN SHIELD, by Studio Saar with the engineers Atelier One. It was built from traditional Indian bamboo police shields and palm-leaf rain covers the design press reported as knups, and it took its form from the pangolin — which the festival guide calls "the world's most trafficked mammal". Objects made to hold a crowd back, re-hung as somewhere a crowd could stand together.

AND IN WAPPING, A HYDRAULIC POWER STATION BUILT IN THE 1890S OPENED TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIRTEEN YEARS — for sound. A twelve-speaker system by L-Acoustics, carrying work by Max Cooper and a journey down the Humber estuary by the sound recordist Chris Watson, from 11 to 15 September.

Across town, graduates of Kingston University's product and furniture design MA took over Ham House, a seventeenth-century estate in Richmond, for the festival's run.

THE READ1 para

The strongest design work this week did not make a new object; it changed what an existing one means — a police shield turned into shelter, a dormant industrial shell turned into a listening room. For brand and experience work, the reusable move is to take a structure people already read one way and make them read it another.

The spatial read

A power station that has been shut for thirteen years reopening for five days as a listening room is the clearest statement of the week about where industrial London's value now sits: not in what the building made, but in the volume it encloses. And a shelter built on the Strand — one of the city's ceremonial routes — out of police equipment turns the street's own vocabulary of order back on itself.

Runs only where the place is real, dated and sourced — spatial intelligence, not spatial atmosphere.
What this does not show

One bylined guide of 3 September 2026, published before the festival opened; the installations are reported as scheduled and this desk has not verified each took place as described. 'Knups' is the term as reported in that guide. The pangolin quotation is the guide's description, not an independent statistic. All three installations were temporary and are now closed.

A MUSEUM OPENS IN LOS ANGELES FOR THE KIND OF PICTURES MUSEUMS USED TO REFUSE

CRESTING·SOURCES: PRIMARY·art·DAY 2 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

THE LUCAS MUSEUM OF NARRATIVE ART OPENS TO THE PUBLIC ON TUESDAY 22 SEPTEMBER, IN EXPOSITION PARK, LOS ANGELES. The building went up first on Saturday 19 September with an opening-night celebration co-chaired by Julie Bell, Tom Cruise, Greta Gerwig, Jensen Huang, JR, Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro and Pharrell Williams.

AS REPORTED3 para

THE NUMBERS ARE THE ARGUMENT. Three hundred thousand square feet by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec. More than a hundred thousand of those square feet are gallery, across thirty-plus rooms. More than one thousand three hundred works in the inaugural exhibitions.

AND THE HANGING LIST IS THE REAL PROVOCATION. Artemisia Gentileschi and Norman Rockwell. Frida Kahlo and Robert Colescott. Vincent van Gogh, George Bellows, Jacob Lawrence, Diego Rivera, Judith F. Baca — beside Frank Frazetta and Robert Crumb. A fantasy paperback illustrator and an underground cartoonist, in the same institution, under the same argument: that a picture telling a story is one category, not two.

GEORGE LUCAS PUT IT PLAINLY — the museum "was created to honor humanity's stories and the artists who illustrate them." Mellody Hobson named the ambition: "We wanted a museum unlike any other — one that brings people from every walk of life through the same doors."

THE READ1 para

The taste hierarchy that separated illustration, comics and cinema from art has been dissolved by a building rather than an argument. For anyone making brand or cultural work, the reference pool just got official: the commercial image is now hung as art, and the institution paid three hundred thousand square feet to say so.

The spatial read

Two thirds of the building is not gallery. A three-hundred-thousand square-foot structure carrying a hundred thousand square feet of art is mostly circulation, lobby, storage and plant — the architecture of arrival rather than of looking. It sits in Exposition Park beside institutions the city already built, which is a claim to municipal permanence rather than to a scene.

THE RECORD BUSINESS HAS SIGNED A DOCUMENT SAYING ITS OWN NUMBERS ARE DIRTY

BUBBLING·SOURCES: PRIMARY·music·DAY 2 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

ON 14 SEPTEMBER THE IFPI LAUNCHED THE STREAMING INTEGRITY INITIATIVE, AND TWENTY-SEVEN COMPANIES PUT THEIR NAMES TO IT. Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. CD Baby, AWAL, RouteNote. IMPALA, WIN, Merlin. The majors and the people who upload for everyone else, on the same page.

AS REPORTED3 para

FIVE COMMITMENTS, AND THEY READ LIKE A BANK'S: VERIFY rights ownership and customer identity through know-your-customer checks. VET content for infringement and fraudulent activity. ACT on suspected fraud. SHARE intelligence so a bad actor thrown off one service cannot simply walk to the next. MEASURE, and keep strengthening.

THE TEETH ARE IN "SHARE". A customer banned repeatedly can be banned across platforms, with immediate bans available where circumstances warrant. That is an industry-wide blocklist for uploaders, built by the distributors themselves.

IFPI'S CHIEF EXECUTIVE VICTORIA OAKLEY DID NOT SOFTEN IT: "Streaming fraud misleads fans and deprives legitimate artists and songwriters of income that should rightfully flow to them. This is theft, plain and simple."

THE READ1 para

Every chart position, playlist placement and streaming-count slide in a deck sits on a number the industry has now collectively described as manipulable. If you buy or sell music marketing, the useful read is that the counting layer is being rebuilt with identity checks and a shared blocklist — and that whoever gets banned first will tell you how real the enforcement is.

A MISSION STREET ROOM COMES BACK AFTER SIX YEARS, ONE TEST WEEKEND AT A TIME

BUBBLING·SOURCES: JOURNALISM·music·DAY 2 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

BRUNO'S, AT 2389 MISSION STREET, IS OPEN AGAIN AFTER SIX YEARS DARK. It closed in the early pandemic and stayed closed. Noelle Calixto took it over; Travis Blain runs it. A soft opening on 12 September, test-run events every weekend of the month, and a grand opening aimed at the first weekend of October.

AS REPORTED2 para

THE ROOM HAS HAD THREE LIVES. Italian restaurant, then a labour hangout, then a nightclub. It is reopening as the third thing, booked on DJs — REZA and Ibarra on the soft-opening bill — with a stated policy of hiring locally.

AND THE PITCH IS NOT THE LINE-UP, IT IS THE DOOR POLICY AS PHILOSOPHY. Blain: "Guest experience is the first and most important thing. I think a lot of venues treat people like they're lucky to be there. I feel the opposite." On the delay: "I think the neighborhood wants this place going again."

THE READ1 para

Nightlife is reopening the way a restaurant does now — soft launch, test weekends, a grand opening held back until the room works — rather than with a launch party and a headline booking. For anyone opening a space, the signal is that the credible move has become the slow one, and that hospitality, not the line-up, is what is being sold.

The spatial read

A single address carrying an Italian restaurant, a labour hangout and a nightclub in sequence is the Mission's whole argument in one building: the room outlasts every use somebody finds for it. Six years dark is long enough for a lease to turn over twice, which is why reopening the same address matters more than opening a better one elsewhere.

NEW YORK'S ART FAIR MOVED ITS DATES TO GET OUT OF ITS OWN PARENT COMPANY'S WAY

BUBBLING·SOURCES: JOURNALISM·art·DAY 2 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

THE ARMORY SHOW RUNS 24-27 SEPTEMBER AT THE JAVITS CENTER, MORE THAN TWO WEEKS LATER THAN ITS USUAL POST-LABOR-DAY SLOT. The reason reported is not demand, weather or the calendar. It is Frieze Seoul — which shares the same parent company.

AS REPORTED3 para

READ THAT AGAIN. A New York fair rescheduled its own city's art week around a fair in Seoul because one owner holds both, and two of its properties were competing for the same dealers, the same crates and the same collectors' air miles.

WHAT IS INSIDE: around two hundred and thirty galleries from more than thirty countries. The floor plan is now organised around the building's entrances — the south spotlighting Caribbean and diaspora artists, the north weighted to US and New York galleries. Presents, for younger galleries, and Solo, for single-artist stands, each grow by roughly a fifth, to about fifty-five and twenty-five. Platform is curated by Jovanna Venegas of SculptureCenter and Focus by María Elena Ortiz of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, both centred on Caribbean work.

THE FAIR DIRECTOR KYLA MCMILLAN FRAMED IT AS OPENNESS: "The Armory Show has always reflected New York's openness: to artists, galleries and ideas from across the Americas and the wider world."

THE READ1 para

When one owner holds the fairs on three continents, a city's cultural calendar becomes a scheduling problem inside a single company. The read for anyone planning around an art week is that the dates now follow the parent's portfolio, not the city — and that consolidation shows up as a date change long before it shows up as a price.

THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY IS IN LONDON, IT IS SOLD OUT, AND YOU WALK IN AT THE END

CRESTING·SOURCES: JOURNALISM·art·DAY 3 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY OPENED AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM ON 10 SEPTEMBER, IN ROOM 30, THE SAINSBURY EXHIBITIONS GALLERY, AND IT RUNS TO 11 JULY 2027. The first release of tickets has already sold out; more are promised in October. Ten months of a single object, and the queue formed before the doors did.

AS REPORTED2 para

THE DESIGN DECISION IS THE STORY. The tapestry is laid flat beneath glass rather than hung upright, so you look DOWN into the embroidery, the way you read a table, not a wall. You enter the room at the END of the tapestry, not its beginning. And above it, black-and-white animations on the wall recreate selected scenes from the stitching.

READ THAT AS A CURATORIAL ARGUMENT. A thousand-year-old strip of cloth has been staged like an installation: an unfamiliar entry point, a posture that forces you to lean in, a moving layer above the still one. The object did not change. The room around it was built to make you feel you had never seen it.

THE READ1 para

The most sought-after cultural ticket in London this season is an eleventh-century object, sold out on the strength of how it is staged. For anyone building an experience, the lesson is that the room is the product: change the entry point and the posture, and a thing everyone knows becomes a thing everyone has to see.

The spatial read

Entering at the end reverses the reading order a tapestry was made for, and laying it flat turns a wall into a table. The room is built to make the visitor work — to walk backwards through a story and bend over it — which is exactly what separates a pilgrimage from a glance.

TRAFALGAR SQUARE'S NEWEST MONUMENT IS SOMEONE YOU WOULD WALK PAST ON THE BUS

BUBBLING·SOURCES: PRIMARY·art·DAY 3 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

ON 10 SEPTEMBER TSCHABALALA SELF'S LADY IN BLUE WAS UNVEILED ON THE FOURTH PLINTH IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE — THE SIXTEENTH COMMISSION SINCE THE PROGRAMME BEGAN. A bronze woman in a dress painted vivid blue, her jewellery coloured to echo lapis lazuli, stepping forward.

AS REPORTED2 para

THE ARTIST SAID EXACTLY WHAT SHE WAS DOING. "She is not an idol to venerate or a historic figure to commemorate. She is an everyday person." And: "She is striding forward into our collective future with ambition, purpose and optimism."

NOW LOOK AT WHERE SHE IS STANDING. The Fourth Plinth is the one pedestal in the square whose occupant changes by commission, which makes it the place where the city tries out who else belongs on a pedestal — and this time the answer is a woman who could be on the next bus. When she leaves, City Hall says, she will move permanently to Fornebu, in Norway.

THE READ1 para

The monument is being redefined from the person who made history to the person who lives in the city now. For brands and institutions using public space, the most powerful image available is not the hero — it is the recognisable ordinary person given a hero's scale.

The spatial read

The Fourth Plinth is the one pedestal in Trafalgar Square whose occupant changes by commission, and putting an ordinary woman at monument scale there is a statement made by the architecture around her, not only by the sculpture.

THE BIGGEST GAME OF THE DECADE IS COMMISSIONING MUSIC LIKE A RECORD LABEL

BUBBLING·SOURCES: JOURNALISM·music·DAY 3 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

ON 17 SEPTEMBER ROCKSTAR GAMES, WITH ATLANTIC RECORDS, ANNOUNCED THE OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK TO GRAND THEFT AUTO VI: THIRTY-FOUR NEW, ORIGINAL TRACKS MADE FOR THE GAME. Six singles arrived first; twenty-eight are still to be revealed. The first wave names Fred again.., PinkPantheress, Travis Scott, Future, Metro Boomin, Yung Lean, Etienne de Crécy, CA7RIEL, Paco Amoroso and Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. The game is out on 19 November.

AS REPORTED2 para

NOTE THE WORD ORIGINAL. This is not the game's licensed soundtrack — the report is explicit that it is music created specifically for the game, with more to come on the dynamic score and what Rockstar calls "the next evolution of in-game radio".

READ IT AS A COMMISSIONING BUDGET. For two decades these games licensed songs that already existed and turned their radio stations into a canon. This time the game is paying for songs that did not exist, from the artists who top the charts and the ones who run the clubs, and pairing with a label to release them. A game studio has become one of the most important music commissioners on earth.

THE READ1 para

Games are now a primary commissioning channel for music, not just a licensing outlet. For artists and labels, a placement is becoming a commission; for brands, the most coveted music slot of the year is a radio station inside a virtual city.

THE JUDGE KEPT GOOGLE'S AD BUSINESS WHOLE AND PUT A MONITOR INSIDE IT FOR SIX YEARS

CRESTING·SOURCES: JOURNALISM·technology·DAY 4 ON THE BOARD·NO CLAIM FILED

THE REMEDIES OPINION IN THE UNITED STATES ADVERTISING TECHNOLOGY MONOPOLISATION CASE — 106 PAGES, FILED ON 2 SEPTEMBER — WAS PUBLISHED BY 16 SEPTEMBER EXACTLY AS WRITTEN. Neither side asked for a single redaction in the two weeks it was given. Every line of what the court thinks of the market is now public.

AS REPORTED2 para

THE COURT REFUSED TO BREAK THE BUSINESS UP. Forced sale of the ad exchange was rejected; so was open-sourcing the ad server's auction code. The buying-side platform, DV360, faces none of the new restrictions. What the court ordered instead is behavioural and technical: the exchange must be integrated with the open-source Prebid header-bidding framework, in implementations that must be functionally equivalent rather than deliberately worse; publishers get real-time bid data; the exchange must bid into rival publisher ad servers on equal terms; the ad server must document how it chooses an auction winner. A technical monitor gets six years of access — the government asked for fifteen.

READ THE ONE LINE THAT EXPLAINS THE DESIGN. One report describes the judge's "lack of trust" that the company will comply with an order of the court. A court that does not trust the defendant, and still declines to break the business up, is betting that supervision from inside is more reliable than surgery from outside. For six years, every advertiser buying programmatic inventory is trading inside an experiment in whether a monopoly can be governed rather than dismantled.

THE READ1 para

For anyone spending on programmatic advertising, the plumbing is about to change without the owner changing. Expect interoperability with open-source header bidding and more bid data for publishers — and a monitor whose reports will be the best view anyone outside Google gets of how the auction really works.

ON 17 SEPTEMBER THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION ISSUED WHAT IT CALLS AN INNOVATION EXEMPTION: temporary, conditional relief from the definition of an "exchange" for venues trading tokenised national market system stock through automated market makers and liquidity pools. It runs five years from publication, takes effect immediately, and comes with a request for comment. Liquidity providers in those pools get matching relief from the definition of a "dealer".

AS REPORTED3 para

THE CONDITIONS ARE THE INTERESTING PART, BECAUSE THEY ARE WHERE THE OLD MARKET ASSERTS ITSELF. Symbol and volume limits. Verification that a tokenised share carries shareholder rights equivalent to the real one. Written notice to an issuer before a third party tokenises its stock — and an opportunity for that issuer to object. Smart contracts that must be auditable, public, and deployed on permissionless ledgers. Trading that halts simultaneously with the underlying stock on its primary exchange. Public disclosure of the venue's operations and its affiliates' trading.

AND THE TIMING SAYS WHAT THE MECHANISM IS FOR. One trade report notes the Senate voted 49-50 against the digital asset market legislation that would have written this into statute. The agency's chairman framed the exemption as acting "within its statutory authority" to bring the capital markets "into the digital age". When the legislature declines to write the rule, the regulator writes a five-year exception instead — and every firm that builds on it is building on an exception that expires.

AND ON THE SAME DAY THE OTHER MARKET REGULATOR DID THE SAME KIND OF THING. On 17 September the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's market participants division issued Staff Letter 26-25, extending no-action relief to developers of passive trading software — including front ends offered inside self-custodial crypto wallets — that let users submit orders to registered market participants. The conditions follow the same logic: no discretion over routing or execution, no buy or sell signals, no custody of user assets. And like the exemption, it is explicitly temporary, lasting only until the agency writes a rule. Two regulators, one day, two conditional permissions in place of legislation.

THE READ1 para

Tokenised equities now have a federal route in the United States, but it is a five-year conditional exception with an issuer veto attached, not a permanent framework. If you are building on it, the expiry and the comment process are the risk; if you are an issuer, you now have a formal say in whether your stock trades on-chain.

What this does not show

THIS DESK HAS NOT READ THE ORDER ITSELF, only the regulator's press release and two trade reports. The conditions listed are as summarised in the release. No comment deadline is stated in the release read. No venue is named as using the exemption, and none has been reported trading under it. The 49-50 Senate vote is one trade report's account. Whether any dissent was filed by a commissioner is not established here.

The graveyard

22 RULED COOKED

Signals this desk called live and then called over, with the dates of both readings. Nothing reaches this list by fading out: a stone requires a stage that actually changed in a published issue. Where no cause is given, none was written at the time — a cause of death composed now, for something that died in June, would be a story fitted to an outcome already known.

Gone quiet

81 SILENT

This is a fact about this publication, not about culture. These are stories the board carried at least 3 times and has not mentioned for 10 days or more. That happens when a story ends, when it moves somewhere this desk is not reading, and when attention simply drifted — and from here those look identical. The silence is recorded because it is real; what it means is not claimed. Showing the 10 most-covered of 81; the rest are in the archive.

Colophon — how this issue was made METHOD, SOURCES, LIMITS

Coverage

12 signals: 2 new, 10 carried, 2 retired. THERE IS NO ISSUE DATED 21 SEPTEMBER 2026. The daily build did not run that day, and this board does not publish an issue dated for a day it was not written on; the previous issue is 20 September. Culture leads and government, legal and regulatory entries stay capped at two of twelve. Two entries left the front of the board because their events are over — the London fashion-week runway and the archive auction; the auction's dated call on a published total remains in the ledger. No stage moves among carried entries. Carried state claims carry absolute dates. PUBLICATIONS ADDED TO THE SOURCE-TIER LIST, as the provenance note promises: today one, a box-office tracker, typed as a compilation of studio-reported figures — so the entry citing it is typed no stronger than compilation. And three added in the previous issue that its coverage note failed to record, although the provenance note says every issue does: a museum's own press office and a music trade body, both typed primary about their own announcements, and a San Francisco local newsroom, typed journalism. Recorded here late rather than not at all.

Thresholds & what binds them

Signals per issue
12
Twelve stories an issue. Known limit: this desk picks the twelve, and the count can be padded by splitting one story into two — which has happened. Whatever is cut is named in the coverage note of the issue that cut it, so the cap can never imply that twelve was all there was.
Days unchanged before reclassification
5
A story unchanged for five days is reclassified rather than carried on merit it no longer has. Known limit: for the first nine days this rule was cited as an operating default it was performed by hand and had never once fired, because nothing computed it. It is computed now.
Authenticity score, basis
editorial judgement, 0-100, not a measurement
Scores run 0-100 and are editorial judgement, not measurement. Known limit: the scale has never been calibrated against outcomes. Signals are routinely moved a single point for having a quiet news day, and there is no test anywhere establishing that one point is the right amount.
How often sources are read (hours)
4
Sources are READ every four hours, independently of publication, and the figure is taken from the scheduler that does the reading rather than typed here. Known limit: every coverage span quoted is an UPPER bound, because a stale timestamp can only make a window look wider than it really is — so the true picture can be worse than stated and never better. Known limit, second: coverage is measured by modelling how long a source's window is against how often it is read. That model can only tell you loss is POSSIBLE. Actual loss is observed by comparing consecutive readings, and that comparison is blind for any interval whose baseline is missing. Known limit, third: the modelled losses on the fastest trade feeds have been independently confirmed by the loss detector on more than one occasion, so the model's warning about those feeds is corroborated by observation rather than merely predicted. Whether any GIVEN issue lost anything is not stated here — it is read off the gap log for that issue, because a standing note cannot describe a particular day without being wrong on all the others. A four-hourly read is not sufficient for a feed whose entire visible window is under four hours.
How often an issue is published (hours)
24
One issue a day. Known limit: reading and publishing are different clocks and only the reading one determines what gets missed. This desk stated the wrong one of the two in public and corrected it, and then shipped an issue whose numbers used the right clock while its sentences still named the wrong one. Both are now derived from the scheduler so the prose cannot drift from the arithmetic again.

Provenance

HOW TO READ THIS BOARD. Every source is checked twice before publication: once that the link actually resolves, and once that the KIND of source claimed matches the publication it really came from. The second check is automatic, decided in one central list rather than story by story, and it refuses to publish the issue if a source has been overstated or a publication cited that the list has never seen.

WHAT THAT CHECK DOES NOT DO: it does not make provenance verified. It moves the claim from this desk's judgement on each story to one reviewable list that is able to disagree. That is a smaller thing than 'verified' and it is better to say so than to let the word do work it has not earned.

AND THE CHECK'S OWN RECORD, since it is the thing asking you to trust the rest: it was announced as working on 15 August and it was not. It had run once, in a temporary workspace, and vanished with it — while this very note told readers for five days that it guarded every issue. It was rebuilt on 20 August and has refused to publish on several separate occasions since, which is the only evidence worth offering that it does anything.

AND THE LIST IS EXTENDED WHENEVER A NEW PUBLICATION IS CITED, which matters because an extendable list is only as strong as the discipline of extending it. Every addition is dated in the list itself, so its growth is inspectable rather than invisible. The standing rule that does the work: a story can be no stronger than its WEAKEST source, so citing a primary document alongside a weak one does not lift the story — it exposes the weak one. Which publications were added in any given issue, and which stories that forced to be retyped, is recorded in that issue's coverage note rather than here, because this passage is carried between issues and a count of additions would be false the moment it was reread.

Held over, not dropped quietly7 STORIES

This board drops rather than downgrades, and it does not backfill. A missing day is recorded as missing.

  1. A dated call on the platform's legacy creator revenue programmeSTILL UNSCORED. Its date passed on 21 September. The platform's own help page refused this desk's reader, and the other coverage found predates the retirement date, so it says the programme WOULD end rather than that it DID. Named here rather than scored on an announcement.
  2. A dated call on a prediction-market geofenceSTILL UNSCORED, thirteen days past its 9 September date. No evidence found either way.
  3. The Milan Fashion Week opening line-upNOT PRINTED. The week opens on 22 September; both trade previews this desk would read refused its reader, so no line-up is repeated secondhand.
  4. The television awards of 14 SeptemberConsidered and held: real and well sourced, but eight days old by this issue.
  5. Box-office forecasts for the weekendNOT PRINTED. Only actual reported grosses are used; forecast figures circulated in coverage are excluded.
  6. An inflation-adjusted rankingNOT COMPUTED. The record printed is nominal; this desk has not produced an adjusted figure and says so on the entry.
  7. Real-time social-feed signal, twenty-eighth consecutive dayUpstream feed unavailable again. Stated rather than absorbed.

The spatial read

Some stories are carried by the building they happen in. Where the built environment IS the story — or gives it away — this board reads it: what the place is actually for, whether it belongs where it stands, and what it is quietly becoming.

A spatial read requires a REAL, DATED, SOURCED place — a specific building, development, lease or closure. Spatial intelligence, not spatial atmosphere. If it cannot be sourced to a place that exists, it does not run.

A reading applied ACROSS the three lenses, never a fourth door in the nav.

🔴 EIGHTY-SIX STALE SENTENCES ACROSS ELEVEN ISSUES. A signal written on 8 September said 'IN THREE DAYS' about an 11 September deadline and was carried unchanged into the 9 September issue, where the answer was two. A sweep of all 64 issues then found 86 rotted relative-time phrases across 11 of 63 transitions and 27 distinct signals — one entry said 'yesterday' for four consecutive days. Every gate passed all of them correctly: nothing was false or self-contradictory, the sentences were merely OLD, and no instrument here was looking for age. A freshness gate now compares each issue against the previous one, refuses carried prose dated to a day that has passed, and runs inside the publishing step so it cannot be skipped. Verified by pointing it at the 9 September issue, which it refuses.

🔴 THE REACTOR PATTERN WAS UNDERCOUNTED. On 10 September this board said two existing-reactor compute contracts in two days were not yet a trend and to watch for a third. Two earlier agreements of the identical shape existed — the Clinton plant in Illinois (3 June 2025) and operating plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania (9 January 2026). The pattern was counted from this board's own coverage instead of from the record. The entry is rewritten and the claim withdrawn.

2026-09-11

🔴 A STALE STATE CLAIM RAN FOR TWO ISSUES. On 9 and 10 September the transfer-agent entry said Federal Register publication had not been confirmed, so no comment deadline was given. It had been published on 4 September. The staleness check added on 10 September catches relative time and could not see this, because the sentence contained no time word. Carried prose was swept by hand for state claims in this issue; the deadline — 3 November 2026 — is now stated.

2026-09-12

🔴 A PRIZE INSTITUTE'S STATEMENT WAS REPORTED AS ABSENT. On 11 September the Navier–Stokes entry said no statement from the Clay Mathematics Institute on the claim had been found. Its president, Martin Bridson, had told a news agency on 9 September that evaluation would be "deliberately unhurried" and "absolutely rigorous". The sentence was wrong when printed. It is replaced with his words, and the entry states that they describe a process, not a ruling.

🔴 A SECOND MAJOR LABEL HAD ALREADY SIGNED. From 27 August this board said no second major label had followed Universal in licensing fan creation with AI, filed a dated call on it, and on 12 September wrote that the reports read named no other major label doing the same. Warner Music Group signed a licensed agreement with Suno on 25 November 2025 letting users create and remix music from opted-in artists; the licensed models launched on 9 September 2026. The claim was false when printed. The call is scored missed as void on filing, and the entry is corrected.

What is behind each door

WHAT IS BEHIND EACH DOOR. A signal count on its own is ambiguous in the worst direction: a lens showing two stories reads as though nobody looked. So every lens carries the state of the instruments behind it. COVERED means the four-hourly read sees that source's whole window before anything can roll out of it. LOSSY means the window is shorter than the gap between reads, so items provably publish and disappear unseen. SAMPLED means the read catches only a minority of what publishes, and a sampled source is never described as coverage.

READING IS SEPARATE FROM PUBLISHING. Sources are read every four hours; the issue is written once a day. Those are different clocks and only the reading one determines what gets missed — a distinction this desk got wrong in public and corrected, which is recorded above.

Every span measured is an UPPER bound: a stale timestamp can only make a window look wider than it is. So the true picture can be worse than stated and never better.

Imagery

NO PHOTOGRAPHS IN THIS ISSUE, DELIBERATELY. Imagery was built and tested for this design — each picture the lead photograph published by the same article the story cites, credited to that publisher — and it is held back until the rights to reproduce it are secured. A publication that asks readers to check its sources should not run photographs it has no licence for. The pictures return when the licensing does, and not before.
